How to Measure Your AI Visibility

Everyone wants to be recommended by AI. Far fewer check whether they actually are. Here is a simple, repeatable way to measure it yourself, so you can tell whether your effort is working.

You cannot improve what you never look at. Plenty of businesses pour effort into being found by AI and never once check the scoreboard. The good news is that the scoreboard is free and sitting in front of you. The same tools deciding your visibility will tell you exactly where you stand if you ask them properly and write down what they say. Here is how to do it without any special software.

How do I check if AI recommends my business?

Ask the tools the way a customer would, not the way an owner would. A customer does not search your business name first; they describe a need. So open ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI and type the questions a potential customer would actually ask: the best business in your category in your area, who to use for a specific service nearby, recommendations near a landmark or neighborhood. Then read the answer for three things: are you named, who is named instead, and what reason the tool gives. That is your baseline.

Build a small, fixed set of prompts

Measurement only works if you ask the same questions each time. Write down five to ten prompts and keep them stable. A good starter set:

  • "Best [your category] in [your city or neighborhood]"
  • "Who should I use for [specific service] near [area]?"
  • "Top-rated [category] near [landmark]"
  • "[Your category] near me with the best reviews"
  • "Is [your business name] any good?"
  • "Tell me about [your business name]"

The last two matter as much as the first. Plenty of businesses are not in the best-of answers and also get a vague or wrong reply when asked about by name. Both are visibility problems, and both are fixable.

What should I actually track?

Keep it to four columns in a simple note or spreadsheet, one row per prompt:

  • Named? Yes or no, are you in the answer.
  • Competitors named. Who is getting the spot you want.
  • What it says about you. The exact wording when you are mentioned, accurate or not.
  • Sources cited. In tools that show citations, whether your own pages appear.

Run the set across all three tools, date it, and you have a snapshot. Repeat monthly. The pattern over time is the real signal.

Why do the answers keep changing?

You will notice the wording, and sometimes the businesses named, shift between runs. That is normal. These tools search the live web and generate fresh text each time, so no two answers are identical. Do not over-read a single response. Measure with your fixed prompts, look across several checks, and watch the trend: are you named more often this month than last, by more tools, for more of your prompts. That trend is what tells you whether your work is paying off.

Turn measurement into action

The point of measuring is deciding what to fix. If you are absent from category questions, your website and Google Business Profile likely are not clear enough about what you do and where. If a competitor keeps winning, look at what their reviews and pages say that yours do not. If the tools describe you wrong, your information is inconsistent somewhere online.
